To ensure that a Health and Safety Management System is
effective it should be audited on a regular basis.
This will check the adequacy & effectiveness of the
system, how well it is being managed and the control
measures in place.
For an audit to be deemed credible it is recommended that it
is conducted by an independent professional, external to the
organization to ensure an unbiased assessment. The audit is
conducted with cooperation from those responsible for Health
and Safety within the organization. The aim is to establish if
the major parts of the Health and Safety Management System are
working effectively and to analyze the management
arrangements, risk controls and workplace precautions.
Audits are not undertaken to criticise, they will identify
where improvements should be made to the Health and Safety
Management System and should be considered as a learning
process for the organisation and their employees.
The frequency of auditing should depend on the organisations
structure, processes and the effectiveness of the existing
Systems.
