The Reporting
of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations
1995(RIDDOR) requires Employers, self employed and those in
control of premises to report certain workplace incidents.
This legislation sets out exactly what must be reported and
within what timescale.
In addition to
the statutory duties under RIDDOR, Safety Management Systems
require that accidents are investigated and reports made.
The aim is not to blame an individual or the organisation,
but to establish the causes and to make recommendations
which will then allow measures to be taken to prevent
similar or related incidents in the future.
Investigations
should be conducted as soon as possible after the incident
so that events are fresh in witnesses minds and so that
immediate action can be taken to prevent a similar incident
happening again.
